Newsletter June 2017
SHARE YOUR EXCELLENCE
Feedback received about the free advertising opportunity under the ‘Supporting Business in the Park’
banner in this newsletter indicates that it’s proving fruitful in forging new business deals between
neighbouring companies in the Park. As an extension to this, we’d also like to include your stories. What
services or products do you provide that make a difference in people’s lives, or significantly contribute to
our country’s economy? Are you winning awards that your neighbours would be proud to hear about, or
receiving global recognition for projects your company is invested in? If you have a story to tell, or would
like to share something extraordinary that your company either provides or is involved with, please send a
note the newsletter’s editor, Emma Dawson (firstname.lastname@example.org).
UKAMA FOUNDATION'S FEEDING PROGRAMME
We’re kicking off this initiative with an interview about a fabulous feeding programme that’s making a big
difference in the lives of local children.
Based in Capricorn Park, Ukama Holdings, owned and managed by Janine Roberts, provides world-class
contract packaging services for customers across South Africa. ‘Because the company’s staff live in the
Capricorn/Vryrond area, we got to know the community and its needs well,’ says Janine. Most of the
multigenerational families living in this poverty-stricken area only have one breadwinner, and the high
alcoholism and drug rate affects many of the area’s children. ‘We got to know some of the ladies who open
their homes to these children to help keep them off the streets. Because these facilities receive no
government or NGO support, we embarked on a journey to assist families with food and other provisions.
Registered as an NPO in 2015, Ukama Community Foundation supports three informal creches that provide
food for 200 children, between the ages of four months and six years, each day. ‘We serve a hot porridge
breakfast and provide a cooked lunch, Monday to Friday. We deliver fresh, frozen and dry foodstuffs twice
a week, and provide pots, cooking utensils, and crockery and cutlery needed. For most of these children
this is the only food they receive each day.’
Woolworths Capricorn donates fresh vegetables, meat, fruit and yogurt twice a week, and Ukama
Community Foundation raises funds to purchase other essential items. Needed on an ongoing basis is rice,
pasta, tinned beans, tinned pilchards, tinned vegetables, lentils, milk (long life), peanut butter, jam (tinned),
soya mince, stock cubes, nappies, wet wipes, and soap. The Foundation is also always grateful to receive
cot mattresses (preferably plastic covered); cot sheets or mattress covers; blankets; nappies; kids’ socks
and underwear; good, warm second-hand clothing (ages six months to six years) and plastic kiddies’ tables
and chairs (for about 70 children). We are also always grateful for donations of good-quality second-hand
clothes and toys, or educational materials and stationery for the kids.’
If anyone would like to do some outreach, please contact Janine to arrange a visit and see what they do. To
get involved by making a much-needed donation, please contact Janine on 021 788 5182 or at
As Capricorn Park is located in an environmentally-sensitive area, wherever practical,
owners and tenants are encouraged to manage and minimise the waste they
produce within the Park through source reduction, recycling and reusing, as well as
through appropriate separation and disposal practices. Please see the attached
document that lists recycling companies and drop-off sites for your requirements.
